hexcol.gif (5352 bytes)

  • Find out the HTML colour tag for a colour that you've sampled from a paint program.

  • Puts the tag information into the clipboard with a single click.

  • Windows only.
(Tested under Windows 95, should work under Windows 3.x)

What to do next:

  • Download HEXDL.EXE (274,518 bytes) here.
(Save it into a subdirectory on your hard disk or onto a floppy disk.)
  • Click on HEXDL.EXE to automatically extract the program.
(Your computer will go into the dreaded DOS mode as two files extract - HEXCOL.EXE and VBRUN300.DLL. Click the close box at the top of the DOS window, or type Exit if the window is full screen.)
  • Please note: HEXCOL is EMAILWARE. Please send me an email to tell me you've got it.

Running HEXCOL

If all goes well, you should have a functioning program.

Open your image program, and use the eyedropper tool to locate a colour that you want to match in your browser.

I have Adobe Photoshop, so to get the information window, I click on the Window menu, then on Show Info. This gives me a window like this:

psinfo.gif (4161 bytes)

HEXCOL uses only the RGB information (shown in the upper left corner of this box. I want to match some type or my HTML page's background colour to this value.

Start HEXCOL.

Enter the RGB values from into the R, G and B boxes. As you enter the values you will find that the value in the result box changes as you tab from one field to another, and the colour sample box reflects the colour.

When you have entered all the values, you can click on the "Copy value into clipboard" button, and the value shown above including the quotation marks will be copied.

You can now move into your HTML editor and paste the value into place using Ctrl + Insert or Ctrl + V.
